How to ensure coverage of fertility specialists with next job?

December 22nd, 2011

I’m a social worker in a Catholic organization. My UHC coverage does not include seeing a fertility specialist. I am planning to look into invitro fertilization within the next couple of years after I get a new job. I want to stay in social work but not work for any more private church organizations. Is there any way to find out what’s covered by a certain health insurance plan before accepting a job? Are any social work type jobs likely to cover that?

As health care insurance premiums increase, the covered items are decreasing, go figure! My health care plan covered fertility treatments/specialists for many years, and it was discontinued where they no longer cover this service or treatments. Insurance is finicky, because it changes every year, depending on whether the company uses the same insurance company, because some companies "bid out" to insurance providers every year. And even if it is not the same insurance company, as you probably have noticed with your health insurance…..they do make changes on covered items every year it seems. So technically you could choose to work for a company that says the cover it now, but in two years when you are looking to start a family, it technically may not cover it then. I think more insurance companies are removing this coverage to save costs. Many of your larger employment entities do have insurance and benefit information available on their websites….it just most likely won’t cover "premium" costs.

I have questions about my period…?

December 22nd, 2011

.if I get my period on Sunday night, will it be over by Thursday morning?
.does a certain amount of blood come out, then it stops. Or is it that you just release blood for a certain amount of days?
.what does herbal tea do for you when you’re on your period?
.how can I make sure it doesn’t smell?
.how do you put a tampon in?

Normal period lasts on average 5 - 7 days, but can be anywhere from 2 - 8 days. Once you have your period, it generally lasts the same number of days each time.

The fluid (which, technically, isn’t blood but does contain blood) is lining your uterus in preparation for a fertilized egg (preganancy). When that doesn’t happen, this lining comes away and flows out of your vagina.

Herbal tea can help to ease the pain of cramps, as well as placing a heating pad on your abdomen.

Shower every day and change your pad regularly.

The instructions for putting in a tampon can be found on the package insert.

How can I have a baby when I can’t afford the infertility treatments?

November 12th, 2011

My medical insurance will only pay for $500 worth of infertility treatments..My husband and I have been trying to have a baby for the last year and a half and I just cannot afford $300 a month for tests and medicine and everything else. Is there anywhere I can go to get help?

I have the same problem. Look for clinicial trials in your area. This may help if their are any in your area. I was told try IVF this costs about $6,000.00 a try. I haven’t found any place that will help and no trials in my area. It is a shame most insurance companies will pay for men to be treated for ED but doesn’t consider a woman’s infertility a disease or medical problem. I wish you all the luck. Hope you find a way to pay for your treatments.

Is fertility raised slightly after a miscarriage? When do most couples start trying again?

Is fertility raised slightly after a miscarriage? When do most couples start trying again?
Thank you everyone for your insight. Much appreciated. It is a very emotional time for me and my husband. I am thankful for your support and words of wisdom. I will let the community pick the best answer if that is ok. All your answers are great!

`Yes, it is, because your body is already primed for pregnancy.

That doesn’t always mean it is safe to try again right away. After an early (4-5 weeks) miscarriage without any complications: yes. After a later miscarriage or a miscarriage with complications: no. Always follow your doctor’s advice!

I myself miscarried very early, at 4 weeks 2 days. The doctor gave me the okay to try again right away, and we did. I didn’t get pregnant though, we’re still trying.

can surgery fix blocked fallopian tube problems and when is ivf neede?

November 12th, 2011

my hsg showed my tubes blocked. doc said i have zero chance of having children and surgery wouldnt fix it. my only option is ivf. i havent got a second opinion yet but i’ve seen all kinds of surgery online to fix any fallopian tube problem one may have. so why is ivf my only option according to this doctor? any opinions are appreciated. thanks.

Sorry to hear! I’m not a Dr. but I can tell you my story! In Feb 05 I was 9 weeks pregnant and happy as could be, until I started bleeding and went to the OBGYN because of it. He thought I was having a miscarriage and sent me for an ultrasound. The ultrasound said no baby but my blood levels were saying differently. Usually when you have a miscarriage your HGC levels drop, mine were rising. I was getting tested everyday for about a week. Finally when he realized my levels weren’t dropping he took me into emergency surgery that evening to see what was going on. I was having a tubal pregnancy. When I woke up he told me my tubes had severe dropping but he cleaned them out and said I shouldn’t have any future problems getting pregnant. I have had two normal pregnancies since with no help conceiving. So I know that they can clean them out but it is hard for me to say because I was already pregnant. I wish you the best of luck and I would def go get another opinion!

Back pain for 11 months, what is it?

November 12th, 2011

I’m 18
I’m not a sports player, but I’m not a lazy bum
I haven’t been in an accident
I AM sexually active, but its protected sex

My lower back has been hurting since February 2010
Started as cramps, built to pressure and then burning pressure.
My…vaginal area (inside) started swelling and would go away and come as it pleased
It didn’t burn or itch, it just got swollen, to the point where I couldn’t even use a tampon
I’ve tried advil, aleve, tylenol, naproxen, oxycodone, hydrocodone and herbal medications.
Nothing worked, at all. The medications didn’t even make me tired.
I’ve tried yoga, and stretching, and sitting in the chair and pulling my leg up and my arm over.
It just made the pain worse.
The past few months, the pain has been yo-yoing from high to low and it started hurting near my ribs, when I take deep breaths, it kills me to sneeze and cough.
For the past month the pain has spread from just my lower back up my sides, in a big U shape
I’m still getting swollen down there, I’ve been peeing alot more, it’s REALLY cloudy.
Starting just yesterday, when I go to stretch after sleep, if I stretch back I pull my stomach muscles and it hurts, if I hunch forward my back burns.

Give me something, anything as to what’s wrong. I don’t have the money to randomly blow on a doctors appointments, if all they will tell me is "It’s a pulled muscle", for the 3rd time.
This pain is so bad, I’ve thought suicide, just to make it stop. I don’t have insurence so paying $2,140 for a MRI of my back, isn’t really an option. HELP ME PLEASE
Activity makes it worse
Resting makes it worse

I’ve been tested for diabetes and anything they can use urine to test for, I’ve been tested for.

kidney problems from diabetes. Avoid sugar.
get an a1c test. county hospitals help the uninsured.

Anyone have these problems with periods and infertility?

October 22nd, 2011

My symtoms:

Infertility. I’ve been off of birth control for 4 years

Extreme period pain.

IBS during period.

Extreme lower back pain during period.

Very short periods. Only about 3 days.

I have not yet been to a doctor about these issues. I plan on waiting until I finish school then going to a doctor. I’ve always thought that I have endometriosis but my short periods make me think I have something else.

Anyone else with these symtoms?

Please go see a dr. He may be able to take care of whatever is going on before it gets worse.

Waiting could make it worse.
